Lecture: The Empire of Trebizond as reflected in numismatic sources - DDr Lilia Dergaciova (University of Vienna), 13 June 2024, 6 pm
The second evening lecture 2024 in the series of lectures organised by the Austrian Numismatic Society in cooperation with the Coin Cabinet of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna will be given by Lilia Dergaciova, university assistant at the Department of Numismatics and Monetary History at the University of Vienna.
The evening will focus on the coinage of the Empire of Trebizond, which existed from 1204 until its conquest by the Ottoman Empire in 1461. After a brief introduction highlighting the main phases of coinage in the empire, its metrological system and its iconographic features, attention will be focussed on the coinage of Manuel I. He was the first to mint silver coins. He was the first to introduce the silver coin - the asper - a denomination that served as the empire's main currency until his downfall. During the 25-year reign of Manuel I from 1238 to 1263, a large number of these coins were minted.
How many pairs of dies were used to strike his coins? Which groups of coins can be categorised chronologically earlier and which later? Which weight indicators are typical for these groups? Which hoard finds of his coins are known and why are they important for the development of the relative chronology of Manuel's coinage? These and many other questions will be discussed in the lecture.
