The first evening lecture in the series of lectures organised by the Austrian Numismatic Society in cooperation with the Coin Cabinet of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna in the new year will be given by Agnes Aspetsberger, research associate in the Numismatics Collection at the Schlossmuseum Linz in Upper Austria.
At the centre of the evening are the so-called Falsche-Gulden sheets, cradle prints from the late 15th century that were widely used in southern Germany. The sheets warn against counterfeit gold guilders, with descriptions and illustrations to help recognise the forgeries. Where and by whom were the prints produced and who commissioned them? Which gold guilders were used as models for the supposed forgeries? Do the prints bear witness to a large-scale counterfeiting affair or is it perhaps just a rumour? These and other questions will be addressed in the lecture.
Date: Thursday, March 21, 2024, 6 p.m.
Place: Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna, Lecture room (2nd floor), Maria-Theresien-Platz, A-1010 Vienna
The lecture can be attended free of charge with an invitation sent separately to the members of the Society. The lecture will be held in german.
