Collection unlocked: The Coins of the Kingdom of Aksum from the Early 4th to the Early 7th Century A.D.
The holdings of Aksumite coins of the Coin Cabinet Vienna are now accessible via the IKMK.
The 52 specimens (33 gold, 9 silver, 10 non-ferrous metal) date from the time of King Endybi (c. 300-310), the first minting ruler of Aksum (present-day Ethiopia), and extend to the time of King Joel (c. 590-610), when Aksumite coinage gradually came to a standstill.
The basis of this collection is formed by 32 gold coins, which the orientalist David Heinrich Müller (1846-1912) brought back from his South Arabian expedition (1898/99) to South Yemen and handed over to the then Imperial and Royal Numismatic Collection in 1904.
