Lecture: The Crusader Seals from the Monastery of St. Mary in the Valley of Josaphat near Jerusalem - Martin Hirsch (Staatliche Münzsammlung München), November 23, 2023, 6 pm
The next lecture in the series of the Austrian Numismatic Society in cooperation with the Coin Cabinet of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna in 2023 will be given by Martin Hirsch from Munich.
During their almost two hundred years of rule, impressive seals were created for the kings of Jerusalem, princes and religious orders. After the loss of their rule, some of the seals from the monastery of St. Mary in the Valley of Josaphat came to Messina together with documents around 1290. Centuries later, the lead seals, some of which were unique, were acquired by King Ludwig I of Bavaria. The seals and documents shed light on the fate of this once important monastery and questions about the culture of the Crusaders.
