Exhibition preview 2024: "Imperial Impressions – The Emperors and their Court Artists"

Image

The new exhibition of the Coin Cabinet Vienna in 2024 is dedicated for the first time to artists who worked in the environment of the Habsburg (Lorraine) courts and produced artistic masterpieces here in both small and large formats.

Leone Leoni, Antonio Abondio, Georg Raphael and Matthäus Donner, Anton Matthias Domanöck and Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach - are just a few of the personalities selected to trace the path from the all-round genius of the Renaissance to the specialist of the early modern era. On behalf of the emperors, they not only designed medals, but also created highly sophisticated achievements in many areas: For example, in Baroque architecture (Fischer von Erlach), sculpture (Leone Leoni) and goldsmithing (Anton Matthias Domanöck). The comparison of medals with works of art from other genres over a period of 500 years has never before been shown in this form and in this setting.

The exhibition takes place in two collection areas: The Coin Cabinet uses selected characteristic pieces to present the individual artists in chronological order and is devoted to their careers. The focus is on characteristics and major works that distinguished them as "court artists". The Kunstkammer shows top achievements in sculpture and outstanding gold- and silversmith's work.

Only the synopsis of these central masterpieces in different artistic formats allows visitors a new, extraordinary view of the artists and their works!

The exhibition can be seen at the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna from February 13, 2024!

An accompanying publication will be published!
