3000 mark cracked - another 1413 coins from the Nowak Collection online
As of today, further 1,413 found coins from the Nowak Collection project, which are being processed by Kathrin Siegl and David Burisch, are online, making a total of 3118 coins accessible. The findspots are given in the usual way, and this tranche again contains numerous finds from Wagna/Flavia Solva, Lower Austria and northern and central Burgenland.
The highlight of this batch is undoubtedly a denarius of Charlemagne, which is so far the only known representative of this coin type ever found in Austria. The coin found in the area of the Roman fort in Zwentendorf was minted between 793/794 and 813 AD although the mint is unclear. It is assumed that the silver coin was lost during Charlemagne's campaign against the Avars.
There is another denarius of Charlemagne from Zwentendorf in the collection, but it was minted before the emperor's monetary reform.
