Johann Strauss in 12 objects - 6/12

Image

The following article focuses on a medal that stands out stylistically from the series of portrait medals.

The medal, created by Ferdinand Welz (1915-2008), an Austrian medallist and coin engraver of the 20th century, presents the profile portrait of Johann Strauss facing right. The strongly abstract relief portrait, executed in a rough style and framed by the legend JOHANN STRAUSS 1825-1899, is striking. The artist's signature can be found on the lower edge of the neck attachment WELZ. The reverse depicts two masks above a violin, framed by a curtain drapery. Below this is the dedication DER BUNDESMINISTER FÜR UNTERRICHT.

Due to its recent date of origin, the medal can currently only be shown online in IKMK to a limited extent. The original can be viewed in our exhibition showcase!
